The Scholar-Athlete/Community Service Award is designed to focus community attention on the outstanding male and female student graduating from three of the Ventura High Schools each year. Those schools are Buena, Saint Bonaventure and Ventura. The recipients of this award are well-rounded students that are community-minded.
To qualify for this award, a student must have a varsity letter in at least two sports and maintained a 3.0 grade point average during his/her last three years of academics. In addition, each student must have been involved in community service activities. Each high school athletic director is requested to nominate a list of individuals from their school that met this criteria. The list submitted to the Kiwanis club includes information about the accomplishments that qualifies each student for the Scholar-Athlete/Community Service Award.
A committee of Kiwanis Club members carefully reviews the information submitted by the schools. The recipients of the awards are honored at an award dinner held in May, sponored by the Ventura Suburban Kiwanis Club and attended by parents, coaches and club members.
In 2005 we added to the legacy. One of the recipients had an aunt win this award some twenty years earlier. This continues the tradition in certain families. A few years earlier we honored a student who pointed out his father's name on the perpetual trophy.
This program is always a highlight in the club's year. In 2005 we video taped the proceeding. We had hoped to air the the event on our local access channel. Please check out the photos from this year's event. 2007 also saw the retirement of long time coach and Athletic Director Joe Vaughn from Buena. There was a special tribute to him with both Dr. Trudy Arriaga, VUSD Superintendent and Buena Principal, Kyunghe Schwartz.
